The Nova Scotia Chambers of Commerce is the chief advocacy group for more than 6700 business
owners province-wide. Comprised of 32 Chambers of Commerce across the province, the NSCoC
board of directors consists of people who serve on those individual chambers of commerce,
and meet quarterly to formulate province-wide policy decisions aimed at the provincial and federal
governments.
The Nova Scotia Chambers of Commerce lobby governments on issues that include taxation, trade policy, transportation, economic
development, retail hours of business, education and business growth. NSCoC also takes part in national
policy initiatives sponsored by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
Nova Scotia Chambers of Commerce Gets New President
A new person is at the helm of the Nova Scotia Chambers of
Commerce. Wayne Fiander, of Elmsdale, has officially taken over the role of
President from Tom McInnis. Fiander has more than 30 years combined experience
in management, marketing in the pharmacy industry and government affairs on
both the municipal and provincial levels. He has worked for two Premiers of
Nova Scotia and has served as President of the East Hants Chamber of Commerce. “I look forward to
helping the Nova Scotia Chambers of Commerce grow and thrive,” said Fiander. “A
strengthened provincial chamber with a strong voice on business
issues will ultimately lead to stronger chambers at the local level. Business
activity, regardless of whether it is a one person or a 100 person or more
operation, is the driving force of our economy. A more competitive
environment will ensure Nova Scotia
businesses have access to the world and that our province is the best place
in which to operate a business, live and work in Canada.” McInnis, a lawyer and former MLA from Sheet Harbour,
moves into the position of Past President. Chris
Atwood, the Executive Director of the Community Business
Development Corporation in Yarmouth,
is the newly minted 1st Vice president for the NSCoC. Nancy Frame, of PriceWaterhouseCoopers in Truro
and Jennifer Hamilton-Upham, of Patterson Law in Truro, retain their positions of Treasurer
and Solicitor respectively. The new Executive was brought in at the Nova Scotia Chambers
of Commerce Annual General Meeting which was held in Port Hawkesbury recently.
The NSCoC is the umbrella group for 32 chambers of commerce in Nova Scotia.
